About the Event

Small Engine Repair Class

Some of the things students will learn are...

Introduction to Small Engines

  • Small engine types and their basic components.

  • Overview of small engines (2-stroke vs. 4-stroke engines)

  • Main components: cylinder, piston, crankshaft, valves, carburetor, spark plug, etc.

  • Basic safety practices for working with engines

  • Tools and equipment required for small engine repair

Engine Operation and Theory

  • How internal combustion engines work

  • 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke cycle comparison

  • Fuel, air, and spark: the three essential elements for engine operation

  • Compression, ignition, and exhaust processes

Fuel and Air Systems

  • How carburetors work

  • Fuel lines, fuel filters, and air filters

  • Fuel system troubleshooting (e.g., fuel not reaching the engine, clogged filters)

  • The importance of fuel quality (e.g., ethanol in fuel)

Ignition Systems and Electrical Components

  • Understanding the ignition system: spark plug, coil, flywheel, etc.

  • Common ignition system failures and how to fix them

  • Electrical components: battery, starter, and wiring

Lubrication and Cooling Systems

  • Importance of proper lubrication (types of oil, oil change intervals)

  • Cooling systems in small engines (air cooling, fan cooling)

  • Identifying and fixing overheating problems

Compression Testing and Valve Adjustments

  • How to test engine compression and interpret results

  • Diagnosing low compression problems (worn piston rings, valve issues, etc.)

  • Adjusting valves on 4-stroke engines

Troubleshooting and Common Repairs

  • Troubleshooting common issues (engine won’t start, rough running, overheating, etc.)

  • Systematic troubleshooting: fuel, air, spark, compression

  • Using diagnostic tools like multimeters and compression testers

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  • Routine maintenance (oil changes, spark plugs, air filter cleaning)

  • Storing engines properly for long periods

  • Maintaining proper fuel and lubrication systems

This course will conclude with all students being SNAP ON certified.
